Week 3

  • A story about a happy/challenging/funny/meaningful moment from the week:
    • The air conditioning in the shop stopped working during our mini heatwave earlier this week. However, we were able to open the doors and eventually get it fixed in the afternoon!
  • What I've learned and progress reflection:
    • I learned about rate changes for the different seasons of the year and how to contact player services over the walkie talkie. In addition to helping out at the shop, I've spent some of my free time learning the definitions of various golf terms. Pasted below is the list of terms I'm currently trying to memorize.
    • Definitions are copied and pasted from https://practical-golf.com/golf-terms/
      • Birdie – When you score one stroke under par
      • Par – When your score for the hole equals the listed par
      • Bogey – Scoring one stroke above par
      • Double Bogey – Scoring two strokes above par
      • Green in Regulation –  When any part of the golf ball is touching the putting surface and the number of strokes taken is two fewer than par. For example, on a par 4 if you reach the putting surface with your first, or second shot you have hit the green in regulation.
      • Pitch Mark – A small indent that your ball makes on the green when it lands.
      • Ace – Another word for a hole-in-one
      • Pull – When a golfer says they pull their shot, they have hit it directly to the left.
      • Albatross – Another word for double eagle, or when scoring three under on a hole. This only occurs if you were to make a hole in one on a par 4, or hole out on your second shot in a par 5.
      • Chunk – When a golfer says “I chunked it,” that usually means that they made contact behind the golf ball, and their club had dug into the ground too deeply.
      • Texas Wedge – A Texas Wedge is another term for using a putter any time you are off the green. Some players will elect to putt from the fairway, rough, or even the bunker sometimes.
I spend the majority of the day behind this exact desk.

  1. You are learning a bunch of new vocabulary! Have you had the opportunity to try out the vocabulary in person? Have you chunked a ball?

    1. Hi Becky! As of now, the vocabulary has not been used in real-world practice. Hopefully, this summer will be the summer I finally learn how to play.

  2. As a golfer I love the inclusion of the vocab list! Are you learning from other golfers, or through your own research? This seems like a super fun senior project!

Ps: are they any discounts on greens fees for C & C members?

    1. Both sources! Hmm, I don't think the manager would approve. I guess you'll all just need to become members..

  4. Last week was mostly routine work in the golf shop. I can sense that I'm slowly improving with the whole customer service thing.
